Dr. Nirmal Kumar Ganguly is Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research. His previous positions include President of India’s National Academy of Medical Sciences (2000-2002); Professor and Head of the Department of Experimental Medicine & Biotechnology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (Chandigarh, India, 1986-1998), and Associate Professor of Parasitology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, (Chandigarh, India, 1978-1983).

Dr. Ganguly’s principal research interests are ethical issues in biomedical research, microbiology, parasitology, and diarrheal diseases and research. He has published hundreds of articles and book chapters on these and other research topics. His national awards and honors include the Shakuntala Amir Chand Award from the Indian Council of Medical Research, the R.M. Kasliwal Award in Amoebiasis from the National Academy of Medical Sciences, the Barclay Memorial Medal from The Asiatic Society (1999), the SASAT Distinguished Career Award (2000), and Life Time Achievement awards from the Indian Association of Medical Microbiology (1996), the Society for Immunology and Immunopathology (2001), and The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai.

After receiving his M.B.B.S. from R.G. Kar Medical College, Calcutta, Dr. Ganguly earned his doctor of medicine in Microbiology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. In addition to earning a Doctorate of Science honoris causa from Bundelkhand University, Jhansi in 2000 and Honorary Doctor from Yerevan State Medical University in 2001, he has achieved several other qualifications including FNA, FNASC, FASC, FRCPath, FRCTrop, and FAMS.
